What is permarexia Its a word with no definition yet has been used in major publications (Cleo Malaysia sept 06) spoken on television (aca Australia sept 2006, Elle UK October2006)
Permarexia is the condition if I may call it that, that one( usually female) finds herself trying to maintain a wieght level what she considers to enhance her acceptable body image.
Unlike anorexia permarexia is a permanent state of diet that in extreme cases maintains just enough sustenance to the human body to maintain a waif like appearance.
Recently wrongly or rightly Victoria Beckam has be labeled permarexic.
This condition also applies to those whom binge during certain times and then diet to remove what is considered body fat and condition caused by this binge eating.
It all relates to ones body image and how one sees one self .
In articles written it gives figures of 95 per cent of females in some way mild or severe are permarexic.
The reference here is to those who constantly diet to maintain their body image. This behavior is not necessarily deemed to be abnormal in fact in western society dieting is a multi billion dollar industry and we must not over look the fact the obesity and excessive weight can be and has been proved to be a danger to ones health.
The media will pick up on this as time progresses and we must consider that permarexia is more a condition that effects those who diet to excess where as there appearance and health may seem to be slightly abnormal. Also it may appear that these persons may have more a obsession to diet than an obsession for body image.
Picture are conjured in our mind of the waif type models seen in abundance in
the 1990's or even today. That body image and the influence it has on others is
another issue into itself.
That waif like all ribs no chest model comes into my mind ,what health issues this may lead to can only be described in case histories of these individuals and that type of information can be very difficult to acquire
Facts are required on the subject , and it with this thought that this web site may somehow offer the curious some answers.
We must also consider the long term effects dieting may have to individuals and the imbalances in ones metabolism caused by this dieting. The example of that is sometimes the rapid weight gain when a diet is suddenly altered.
I would be happy to publish photographs should you have any to further describe this condition. I do ask that the person in the photograph is aware that it is for this site and on this subject.
I wish not to confuse you on the relevance of permarexia against anorexia. Anorexia is severe and young people die . For the families of anorexia victims our heart go out to you and wish you all the support you deserve. But please be aware that permarexia in its extreme form can also be devastating . It also effects the lives of millions. Where it goes in the next 20 years or so will be anyone's guess.
The effect of permarexia (constant dieting ,fad dieting, ) will only be know in coming years. Again I will not underplay the severity of anorexia
one iota. If you have a high expectation of your body image you need to ask why and what are the influences behind that high expectation.
All in moderation but if you feel it is a problem in your day to day life then maybe it worth while just giving a small amount of thought to what you are doing , and the effects that it may hav

Eliana "Elle" Ramos (c. 1988 – February 13,
2007) was a Uruguayan fashion model.
Ramos was a well-known fashion model in Latin America and was signed to Dotto
Models, a renowned modeling agency in Argentina.
On February 13, 2007, Eliana Ramos was found dead at her grandparents' home in
Montevideo, Uruguay, at age 18. Preliminary examinations indicated the cause of
death as heart attack,[1] believed to be related to malnutrition;[2] however,
final test results will be released at a later date.
Modeling friends confirmed that she had suffered for many months after her
sister Luisel Ramos, 22, died of heart failure, but rejected speculations that
an eating disorder could have played a role. Her sister died shortly after
stepping off a runway in August 2006 during a fashion show at a Montevideo
hotel. An autopsy resulted in the same cause of death.
The deaths drew widespread media attention in Latin America, where the fashion
industry's treatment of young women has been the subject of debate since
anorexia was blamed for the deaths of model Ana Carolina Reston and three other
women in December.
